Black was a third round draft pick out of Wilfrid Laurier by the Winnipeg Blue Bombes in 1984. Black played 10 full seasons for the Bombers from 1985 to 1994, before being traded partway through the 1995 season. In his years with Winnipeg, Black won three East All-Star honours (1989, 1993 and 1994) and one CFL All-Star (1993). Black was traded to Ottaw five games into the 1995 season for defensive lineman John Kropke.
